Back four shift

Shadow play for a back four. The ball moves between five passers and the defenders move as a unit: one presses the ball and three cover.

Description

Five passers stand across the pitch and move the ball between them. The back four and the keeper move with each pass. The defender nearest the ball steps out to press and the other three tuck in to cover.

Organisation

Half pitch. Five passers on a line 15m in front of the back four. Start at walking pace and then play at match speed. Do 3 x 6 minute sets. Progression: the passers can play a ball in behind and the line must drop.

Coaching points

  • One out, three in: one player presses, the others cover and balance.
  • Move while the ball travels, not after it arrives.
  • Keep 8 to 12m between defenders.
  • Step up together when the ball goes backwards or sideways without pressure.
  • Talk all the time. The keeper organises the line.
